Why painting is different in Providence
Providence is an old wooden city. Colonial houses on College Hill, Victorians in the West End and the Armory District and triple-deckers across Mount Pleasant, Smith Hill and the South Side are nearly all wood-framed, with clapboard or cedar shingles outside and plaster inside. Many are three stories tall with stacked porches and a great deal of trim. Cold, wet winters, humid summers and salt air from Narragansett Bay work on every joint.
Almost all of this housing was built before 1978, so old paint may contain lead. Rhode Island runs its own lead-safe renovation programme through the Department of Health, and painters must also be registered with the state Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board. In the city's local historic districts, the Historic District Commission does not review paint color, but it does review changes to siding and trim. We plan each job with those rules in mind.
How we work
You call, text or book online, and we walk the job and measure. You get a written quote that lists the prep, the paint and the price. Before painting we cover floors and furniture and repair and prime the surfaces. Patching, sanding, caulking and priming are part of the job. Then come two coats, a full clean-up and a final walk-through with you. Most interior rooms take one to two days, and a full exterior usually takes three to five days depending on weather.
