These are the questions Providence homeowners and landlords ask us most often, with short answers. They cover price, lead paint in older homes, contractor registration, the outdoor season, historic districts and prep. Our guide pages go deeper on each topic. If your question is missing, call or text (401) 414-4566.
How much does it cost to paint a house in Providence?
By national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, a whole interior costs $3,500 to $10,000 on average and an exterior costs $3,000 to $10,000 for a 2,000 square foot house. Those are not our quotes. Old plaster, height, trim and prep set your price, and we give it in writing after a free estimate.
My house was built before 1978. Does lead paint change the job?
Yes. Rhode Island requires lead-safe work when painted surfaces are disturbed in pre-1978 homes, and the painting company needs a Lead Renovation Firm licence from the Rhode Island Department of Health. Ask any painter to show it.
Do painters need a license in Rhode Island?
There is no separate painter's trade license, but painters must register with the state Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board and carry liability insurance. You can look up any contractor at crb.ri.gov. Providence Painting Solutions is licensed and insured.
When can the outside of a house be painted in Providence?
Roughly May to early October. The wall must be dry and warm enough for the paint, and rain, dew and cold nights decide the exact days. Interior painting goes on all year.
Do I need approval for paint colors in a Providence historic district?
No. The Providence Historic District Commission does not review paint color or the repainting of painted surfaces. It does review changes to siding, trim and other materials. Condo associations may have their own rules.
Do you do the prep work and move furniture?
Yes. Patching, sanding, caulking and priming are part of the job and the quote. We move and cover furniture and protect floors. We only ask you to put away small and fragile items.
How long does it take?
Most rooms take 1-2 days. A full exterior usually takes 3-5 days, depending on weather.
