Cumberland is the northeast corner of Rhode Island, between the Blackstone River and the Massachusetts line. The south end is the oldest and most closely built. Valley Falls, Lonsdale, Berkeley and Ashton are mill villages with brick and wood mill houses, duplexes and triple-deckers from the 1800s and early 1900s. Old clapboard, wood porches and many paint layers are normal there.
