Best Time of Year to Paint a House Exterior in Providence

When to paint a house exterior in Providence, RI: the best months, rain, dew and fog, cold and heat limits, and painting indoors through a New England winter.

Best Time of Year to Paint a House Exterior in Providence

Late spring to early fall is the outdoor painting season in Providence. Winters are too cold, and rain falls in every month, so the work is planned around dry spells. Indoor painting goes on all year.

What is the best time of year to paint the outside of a house here?

The best months are roughly May to early October. Late spring and early fall are often the easiest: mild days, lower humidity and less harsh sun. High summer works too, with early starts and by following the shade around the house. The exact dates move with the weather each year.

Can you paint outside when it is raining or about to rain?

No. Paint cannot go on a wet wall, and it needs several dry hours afterwards to set. We watch the forecast and do not start a side that rain will reach before the paint is dry to the touch. Prep work such as scraping can sometimes go on under cover, but painting waits.

It rained a few hours after painting. Is it ruined?

Usually not. If the paint had a few hours to dry before the rain, it is normally fine. If hard rain hit it while still wet, you may see streaks, spots or a washed-out look. Those areas are left to dry fully, then sanded lightly if needed and recoated. A good painter checks and fixes this without being asked.

How long after rain before siding can be painted?

Wood siding should dry for at least a full day after rain, and longer after a long soak or on shaded sides. The same goes after power washing: allow a day or two of dry weather. Vinyl and aluminum dry within hours. Paint over damp wood blisters and peels, so when in doubt we wait or check with a moisture meter.

How cold is too cold to paint outside?

It is too cold when the air or the wall is below the minimum on the paint can, and that includes the night after. Many exterior paints need 50 degrees. Some are made to go on down to about 35. The wall is often colder than the air, mainly on the north side. In Providence that rules out winter and makes late fall and early spring a day by day call.

How hot is too hot, and is direct sun a problem?

Yes, direct sun is a problem, and most labels warn against painting above about 90 degrees. Hot siding in full sun dries paint before it can level and grip, which leaves lap marks and blisters. Dark colors get much hotter than the air. On hot days we paint each side when it is in shade.

Does dew, fog or humidity matter in Providence?

Yes. Providence sits at the head of Narragansett Bay, and damp mornings and evening dew are common, mostly in spring and fall. Paint needs to be dry to the touch before the dew settles. That means a later start and an earlier finish on those days. Fresh paint that gets wet too soon can dull, streak or let brown stains from the wood come through.

Can you paint inside in winter with the windows closed?

Yes. Interior painting works well in winter with the windows closed. Modern water-based paints are low in odor, and a heated house dries paint well. A fan and a window opened a little for a short time clear the air. Winter is a good time to book interiors and cabinets.
