Cabinet Painting Questions: Cost, Process and How Long It Lasts

Painting kitchen cabinets costs $2,000 to $6,500 for an average kitchen in 2026, by national published figures. This page answers the questions owners ask before they decide.

Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Local labor, paint prices and the condition of your own walls move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?

It costs $2,000 to $6,500 for an average kitchen, by HomeGuide's national figures. That is $30 to $70 per linear foot, or $120 to $190 per cabinet. A small kitchen runs $1,000 to $3,500 and a large one $5,000 to $10,000. Labor is the larger part: $1,600 to $5,500, against $400 to $1,000 for materials.

How much for 20 or 30 cabinet doors and drawers?

By the national figure of $70 to $125 per door, 20 cabinet doors come to $1,400 to $2,500 and 30 doors come to $2,100 to $3,750. Drawer fronts are $30 to $110 each, so 10 drawers add $300 to $1,100. That is arithmetic on published per-unit figures, not a quote. The boxes, end panels and any crown are part of the job too.

Is it cheaper to paint, reface or replace cabinets?

Painting is the cheapest of the three. HomeGuide's national figures put painting at $2,000 to $6,500, refacing at $5,000 to $13,000 and full replacement at $4,500 to $15,000. Replacing the doors only is $2,200 to $6,600. Refacing means new doors and drawer fronts with a new skin on the boxes.

Painting or refinishing cabinets: what is the difference in cost?

Refinishing costs $1,500 to $4,500 on average and painting costs $2,000 to $6,500, by the national figures. Refinishing means stripping or sanding the old clear finish and applying new stain and clear coat, so the wood still shows. Painting covers the wood with an opaque color. Painting takes more prep and more coats, which is why it usually costs a little more.

Are 1990s oak cabinets worth painting, and can oak go white?

Yes to both, if the boxes and doors are solid. Oak from that period is real wood and takes paint well. Its open grain will show through white paint unless a grain filler is used first. Some people like the texture. If you want a smooth, modern look, ask for grain filling and expect an extra step.

Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?

Laminate can be painted if it is firmly stuck down, with a bonding primer made for slick surfaces. Thermofoil is harder. It is a thin vinyl skin over fiberboard, and when it starts to peel at the edges, paint will not hold it on. Peeling thermofoil doors are better replaced. Sound thermofoil can be painted, but it will never be as tough as painted wood.

Spray or brush for cabinets, and are doors sprayed off site?

Spraying gives cabinet doors the smoothest finish, and brushing and rolling with the right paint gives a good finish with a slight texture. HomeGuide lists spray painting at $40 to $100 per linear foot, against $30 to $70 for standard painting. Many painters take the doors and drawer fronts away to spray them and paint the boxes in place by brush and roller. Ask us how your kitchen would be done.

Can cabinets be painted without removing the doors?

They can, but the result is worse. With the doors off, every edge gets coated, the hinges stay clean and the paint lies flat while it dries. Painting with the doors hung leaves bare edges and drips around the hinges. We take doors and drawer fronts off and label them so they go back in the same place.

How long does cabinet painting take and can I use the kitchen?

Cabinet painting takes 3 to 5 days by the national figures, and you can use your kitchen for most of it. The sink, stove and fridge stay in place. You will not have doors on the cabinets for a few days, and wet surfaces must not be touched. Humid Rhode Island summers slow drying, so allow a little extra time then.

Will painted cabinets chip or peel?

Painted cabinets can chip where they take hard knocks, but they should not peel if the prep was right. Peeling comes from paint over grease, gloss or dust. Chips happen at the edges of the busiest doors and drawers. A hard enamel made for cabinets, over the right primer, keeps chipping low, and small chips can be touched up.

How long does cabinet paint last, compared with a factory finish?

Painted kitchen cabinets last 8 to 15 years, by the national figures. A factory finish is baked or cured on in a controlled plant and is harder than paint applied on site. A good painted finish gets close but needs gentler care: mild soap, a soft cloth and no scrubbing pads. Be gentle for the first weeks while the paint hardens.

What kind of paint do pros use on cabinets for a smooth finish?

Pros use an enamel made for cabinets and trim that levels out as it dries, so brush marks disappear and the cabinet surface cures hard. Wall paint stays too soft. Under it goes a bonding or stain-blocking primer suited to the old finish. We do not name a brand here, because the right product depends on the cabinets. Ask us what we would use on yours.

I painted my cabinets myself and they look bad. Can a pro fix them?

Usually, yes. If the paint is sticking well and the problem is brush marks, drips or a rough feel, the doors can be sanded smooth and recoated. If the paint is peeling or stays tacky, it has to come off back to a sound surface first, which costs more than painting cabinets that were never touched. Show us a door and we will tell you which case it is.

In Providence kitchens built before 1978, old site-built cabinets may have lead in the early paint layers. Sanding them is covered by Rhode Island's lead-safe rules. See our lead paint page.
